Lighthouses of New York Greater New York Harbor Hudson River & Long Island by Jim Crowley
A picture tells the story of lighthouses more vividly than words, and as you will see in this book, many parts of the maritime world have had revolutionary changes in recent times but lighthouses have endured these changes and taken on a new life. They are no longer an important part of piloting and navigation for vessels, displaced by electronics and satellites. The legendary lighthouse keeper's position has now faded into history as an occupation. Lighthouses, however, have survived, many placed on the National Register of Historic Places and others taken under the wing for preservation by historic societies.
The author has taken each light and, besides including a photo and detailed location, also gives a short history and legends.
Many like the Blackwell Island Light on Roosevelt Island in the East River, are passed by, but seldom recognized. Moreover, Ambrose Tower in the Atlantic Ocean and the Staten Island Range Light are unknown except to those in the maritime industry.
