A Folding Pocket Guide to Purposeful Knots

Knots have been in use for thousands of years. The oldest known knots-found on a fishing net preserved in a peat bog in Finland-were scientifically dated to 7,200 BC.  Knots have three practical purposes-to attach a rope to another rope, to attach a rope to an object or to allow a rope to perform a function. All knots have multiple uses. There are several types of knots including bends, hitches, loop knots, lashings, binding knots, stopper knots and splices. The language of knots is complicated since, for example, a fisherman’s bend is actually a hitch and a fisherman’s knot is a bend. For this reason, the authors have not classified knots by type but according to key function.
