Lighthouses of New York Greater New York Harbor Hudson River & Long Island

Lighthouses of New York Greater New York Harbor Hudson River & Long Island. From the late 18th through the early 20th centuries, lighthouses served as primary aids in navigation for mariners transporting cargo and people along our busy waterways. They helped ships reach their destinations safely, thus enabling maritime commerce and travel to flourish as our country expanded. Today mariners rely more on sophisticated electronic navigation systems and less on lighthouses to guide them safely into port. The purpose of this book is to introduce the reader to all the remaining lights in the waters of New York Harbor, the Hudson River, and Long Island, and show their diversity. Most of the lights are currently active aids to navigation, working in concert with modern electronic navigation.
